Lift to Clear Water depicts the 127-foot knockabout schooner Arethusa outward bound for the Grand Banks. The brightly painted steam tug Nellie has let go of the towline as the schooner crew prepares to set the foresail, jib, and jumbo. Grand Banks fishing schooners evolved over time to increase speed, capacity, and safety. The knockabout schooner was a Thomas McManus design from 1902. The elimination of the bowsprit kept the crew inboard and off the notorious “widowmaker,” without sacrificing a vessel’s capacity in the hold down below. Arethusa was built and launched from the James & Tarr Shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts, in 1909, and had a brief hiatus from fishing during Prohibition, when she was used by the famous rum-runner Bill McCoy for that illicit trade. She was lost off Halifax in 1929.
